INTERREGIONAL FAST TRAINS PROJECT

Client

FNM – Northern Milan Railways

Year

2018

Project objectives:

The aim of the study was to define the current and potential demand for road and rail transportation along four rail routes connecting to the Lombardy capital, in anticipation of the introduction of a new fast train service. As part of the study, a benchmark analysis was first conducted on similar transport services implemented in Italy and Europe. Next, the specific context was analyzed, with the detailed definition of the multi-modal offer serving the various corridors and the estimate of the demand. Finally, a service supply model was developed with the aim of increasing the ability to attract demand currently served by alternative modes of transportation.

Output:

  • Findings of the benchmark analysis.
  • Performance analysis of current routes (infrastructure characteristics, travel times and costs).
  • Analysis of the demand affecting the considered corridors.
  • Definition of the Catchment Area for the stations served by the new high-speed connections.
  • Estimate of the potential demand for each corridor and in total.
  • Preliminary design of the new service.
